Instead, he gets paid directly by the client or companies. In these tough times where employment is very difficult to find, many have turned to freelance to tackle unemployment. According to data, more than 2 million Americans have turned to freelance since 2019.

Temp work vs. Freelancing

Both freelancing and temp work have experienced a boom in the last few decades, especially with the globalization of the internet. Although tempting and freelancing may seem similar, there are some differences between the two. Here are some of the differences between the two types of workers:


Many people think that being a freelancer is easy because they think they can work from their home's comfort and have flexible time to complete the project. However, as a freelancer, you have to depend on everything on your own. No one can give you advice. You have to solve problems on your own every time you come across one, and you are also pushed to learn new things merely to solve an issue.

On the other hand, being a temp worker, you have all the guidelines and a leader to lead you through a problem. Also, here you leave your work at work, you don't have to take home your work problems. You have specified time to work, and the responsibilities are as per your skills and capabilities.  

Income Tax

As a freelancer, you must handle your tax computations and complete the essential documentation to manage your tax information and deductions. Your temp agency may have handled the procedure for you as a temp worker, and you simply received the tax-deducted amount as pay.


The workload of a freelancer might vary depending on the job and the time. Some projects need completion in a matter of days, which can be tiring, particularly if the project is large. However, as a freelancer, you have the final say on whether or not to take the assignment. Also, if time is not an issue, you have the choice to do the task as per your timing. 

So you can also have time for family and to go out as you wish. Most freelancers have the luxury of working from home without gouging to the workplace if the work can be done online.

On the other hand, as a temp worker, the employer has already set the hours and tasks for you. In addition, most temp employees are recruited by businesses just to assist them during times of peak demand. As a result, we may anticipate that the amount of work that is outsourced will be limited.

Hourly rate

The payment rate for a freelancer is more alluring, especially if you consider that you are getting paid directly by the client. You can also work on big projects that pay you heavily. But you should also consider the amount of repair and maintenance of the pieces of equipment you are working with. You also have to invest in new tools, software, and gadgets to increase efficacy and speed up your work.  

However, working as a temp worker, you work at an hourly rate, so you get paid per your sitting hours. You also get paid extra for working overtime. Also, with temp work, you have the chance to work for long-lasting contracts, so there is little chance of sitting without work like in freelancing.


As a freelancer, there is no assurance that you will get work all the time. There are months where you will get so much work, while there are also drought months where you can't get any work. So you have to chase clients and be brutal to succeed.

Working as a temp worker, you will get to know how much time you'll stay employed and also if you're lucky you get employed for a long period. There is also a chance that the company will renew its contract with you if they find your work useful. Some temp workers even get hired permanently.

Generally, freelancers are not covered under any law that protects traditional workers like harassment, abuse, workplace harassment, etc. But there are laws that freelancers should know regarding copyright and other legal issues.  

As a temp worker, the law applies in the same manner as it does to a company's regular employees, like the right to take appropriate rest per day and limits on the number of working hours, etc.

This has been a topic of debate between industrialized and developing countries all over the world. If you’re one of those who lost their job, you may qualify for Unemployment Insurance (UI), which is temporary income to support you while you look for a new one. The US Federal Government has tried to minimize the intensity of the problem by assisting with state-run Unemployment Insurance. 

This is done to make employers more responsible for their employees in times of hardship and difficulty. Even if you are a non-US citizen, you are eligible to apply for this provided you are legally authorized to work in the US. This UI is sought by workers who lost their jobs, especially during this pandemic. Through this, you can avail yourself up to a maximum of 26 weeks of assistance in a year. 

This UI is funded by the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), a tax levied on the employers as a portion or amount paid to the employees. But this insurance doesn’t cover the workers who voluntarily leave their jobs, people looking for their first jobs, and those who got fired from their jobs because of a just cause. In addition, students, self-employed, independent contractors, gig workers, and other undocumented workers are also not eligible to apply for this.
